The Science Within Us: a digital learning education resource exploring genetic identity

Understanding genetics is crucial for informed decision-making and proper care for those with genetic conditions. Research indicates significant gaps in genetic literacy, with many individuals unable to fully benefit from genomic medicine advancements. Poor genetic literacy can lead to negative attitudes toward genetic testing and conditions. Additionally, children with rare diseases often face stigma and exclusion due to a lack of awareness in schools, workplaces, and society.

The Science Within Us program by Genetic Support Network Victoria addresses the need for current, evidence-based genomic information in schools by providing comprehensive, age-appropriate genomics education for students aged 10 to 18. The program covers genetic concepts, ethical challenges, and promotes inclusivity through real-life stories of children with genetic conditions. It is also a pathway to tackling genomic skill shortages by encouraging an interest in genomics.

It uses several genetic conditions to showcase the real-life experiences of individuals with rare diseases to promote social inclusion and fostering acceptance of diversity through the mode of storytelling and personal experiences.

This platform will provide educators and their students across the nation with free access through a unique URL, www.thesciencewithinus.org.au. The modules have a strong focus on interactivity and providing an inclusive and enriching educational experience for students across Australia.

Teachers and students will be asked to evaluate the feasibility of the program once they’ve used it.

The Science Within Us is live as of July 1st, 2024.
